Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, President Gene Small represented the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and testified to the Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies of the House of Representatives, taking place in Washington, D.C.
The first day of testimonies comprised of two sessions, each featuring eight panels filled with representatives from various tribal nations. Representing the Northern Cheyenne Tribe were members of the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council, as well as the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Secretary, who made the journey to Washington D.C. in order to show their support for the Northern Cheyenne Tribal President, Gene Small. President Small participated in the second session of the day, taking part in panel eight, where he was among the many esteemed Tribal Leaders presenting for their Tribes. During his testimony, he articulated the significant challenges faced by the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in relation to insufficient Law Enforcement provided by BIA and the dire results the Northern Cheyenne Tribe has experienced. The other Tribal Leaders also elaborated on their individual tribes and emphasized the urgent need to ensure the safety and well-being of every Tribal member, whether it be to improve or properly fund law enforcement, fully fund HIS, or enforce EPA regulations with their waterways. Each tribe had it’s own significant fight they had been engaging in, some for decades.
