Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, was the Northern Cheyenne general election voting day, throughout downtown Lame Deer, Montana, despite the chilly conditions, had a steady stream of traffic. People showed their support for the candidates campaigning some beginning early in the morning, serving breakfast to the community to encourage participation in the day’s election, both Tribe and Federal.

As lunchtime arrived, the downtown was buzzing with all the candidates and voter’s alike and continued into the evening despite the areas first snowfall.

Polls opened for voting beginning at 9:00 am to 8:00 pm in all designated districts being signaled with a large blue flag reading Vote Here. The Northern Cheyenne community voted for Tribal President, Tribal Vice President, and one available Tribal Council Seat for the Ashland District, Birney District, Busby District, Lame Deer District, and Muddy District.

After the polls closed at 8:00 PM, the dedicated teams once again began the important task of counting the ballots. This imperative process extended well into the early hours of the morning, and at 2:54 AM, Tribal Secretary Edina Ontiveros RedStar formally announced the reservation-wide results of the election on Facebook.

Congratulations to the candidates who have secured their seats and those who re-secured their seats. Thank you to all those who played a vital role in this electoral process, including those who participated in campaigning, every individual who cast their votes, and everyone who assisted in the various aspects of the voting and counting process. Additionally, we acknowledge the community members who offered their support to the candidates in any capacity.
