On Thursday, July 11th, 2024, representatives from HUD (Housing and Urban Development) visited the Northern Cheyenne Reservation to engage in discussions with tribal officials about the community's ongoing challenges and the potential assistance they could provide. The meeting aimed to foster collaboration and explore solutions to improve the living conditions and housing situation on the reservation.

The HUD visit was arranged by the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Housing Authority. It involved introductions with various departments and entities on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, including the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council and president.

One stop was the Tribal Chambers in the Littlewolf Capital Building, the guests were warmly welcomed with an opening dance and prayer. The dancers showcasing their talent were youth from the local community, among them were the newly crowned Miss Northern Cheyenne and Miss Jr. Northern Cheyenne from the Chiefs Powwow held on July 4th, 2024.

During the meeting, tribal leaders and HUD engaged in a comprehensive open discussion regarding some of the most critical issues confronting the reservation. The key topics that were deliberated upon encompassed the pressing requirement for additional housing options to address the community's needs, the enhancement of law enforcement services to ensure safety, as well as guaranteeing access to clean water for the community.

These issues are evident; however, obtaining accurate figures remains a challenge due to the communities' apprehension in reporting problems. This reluctance stems from the setup where multiple generations reside together under one roof.

Although there were some challenges discussed, it was evident that the meeting marked a significant milestone for the Northern Cheyenne community. Over the past two years, the Northern Cheyenne Council has actively collaborated with RYS grant writers from Rocky Boy, who have played a crucial role in securing various grants and funding opportunities for the tribe. One of the most noteworthy achievements was the successful acquisition of a $52 million grant for broadband infrastructure, which kickstarted the Broadband Initiative alongside projects focusing on renewable energy and solar panel installations.
