Land Board

 

The Northern Cheyenne Land Board is committed to the betterment of the community.


AUTHORITY:

The Tribal Council of the Northern Cheyenne shall exercise all the powers granted to the Tribal Council in the Amended Constitution and Bylaws of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe concerning acquisition of lands, lease or encumbrance of tribal lands, interest in all trust and non-trust lands held by the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

PURPOSE:

There shall be established a Northern Cheyenne Land Board. The Northern Cheyenne Land Board shall be comprised of the members of the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council and shall carry out land management functions specific to the Tribe’s homeland and other lands acquired by the Tribe. Stewardship and administration shall be in accordance with the Amended Constitution and Bylaws of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.  The purpose is to ensure that lands provide benefits for present and future generations. 

FUNCTIONS:

The Northern Cheyenne Land Board oversees 440,000 acres of tribal which is defined as lands held within the exterior boundaries of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.  Other such lands acquired by the Northern Cheyenne Tribe shall also be managed and administered by the Land Board. Tribal lands shall be managed by the Tribal Council for the benefit of the members of the entire Tribe.

The unallotted lands of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and all lands which may hereafter be acquired by the Northern Cheyenne Tribe or by the United States in trust for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, shall be held as tribal lands and no part of such land shall be mortgaged, sold or ceded.  Tribal lands shall not be allotted to individual Indians but may be assigned to members of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, or leased, or otherwise used by the Tribe.
